The vast wealth of India's spiritual wisdom arises out of the inspirational texts and teachings of its most ancient traditions. In this class, we will explore the foundations of Indian spirituality in the Vedas, Upanishads, Yoga Sutras, and the Bhagavad Gita. The weekend will culminate with an introduction to the powerfully transformational worldview of tantra. Clear descriptions of key teachings will be offered, along with contemplative explorations of how we can draw on this ancient wisdom to meet the challenges of contemporary life. Each set of teachings will be engaged on the mat, with periods of asana practice designed to complement our philosophical study.

Karen Harris is a lifelong student of religious traditions who brings both the rigor of academic research and the insight of decades of committed spiritual practice to her work as a university lecturer, yoga philosophy instructor, and interfaith minister. She has spent years traveling in Asia, and has lived and practiced in ashrams and monasteries in the US, India, Nepal, and Tibet. Karen received her Master of Divinity degree from Harvard Divinity School.

Karen has the ability to inspire deep embodied realization, turn the power of word, and pierce into the heart. She has an excellent ability to synthesize and capture the essence of practice and teaching and to share it so we get it. Beautiful teachings, clearly portrayed, and shot through with profound realization. — Humboldt State University student
